Moving to the U.S. from Armenia 17 years ago, I came to realize that people from all over the world emigrate from their homelands to America to live a better life, to get a good education, a good job, and be safe. But too many immigrants fall captive to the rich world addiction to overconsumption. My awareness of this problem inspired me to create “Getting It”.
Through “Getting It” I explore how people “get” what they need… to satisfy their different values, lifestyles, and addictions. We often see people collecting material goods to make them happy, instead of collecting positive emotions and thoughts. My goal for this project is to make my audience feel and understand that they can decide how to live… that they can choose what to “get” from life.
My “Getting It” public art project is a series of window installations displayed on a building facade in downtown Glendale. Each installation is a three-dimensional assemblage of prints on fabric and paper. To maintain simplicity in my images, I use only line. And my unique oil monotype technique gives my line a sense of vibrancy.
